MMA Prop Bets Explained — Method of Victory, Round Betting & More

Go beyond the moneyline — learn how to bet on method of victory, round totals, and other UFC prop markets.

What Are Prop Bets in MMA?

Prop bets (proposition bets) are wagers on specific outcomes within a fight, beyond just picking the winner. While the moneyline asks "who wins?", props ask "how do they win?" and "when do they win?"

MMA prop markets have grown significantly in recent years. Major sportsbooks now offer 10-20+ prop markets per main card fight, including method of victory, round betting, exact winning method, fight specials, and more.

Props are popular because they offer higher payouts than moneylines and let you leverage specific matchup knowledge. If you know a fighter has elite wrestling and their opponent has weak takedown defense, a submission or decision prop might offer better value than the moneyline.

    Method of Victory Bets

Method of victory bets let you wager on how the fight ends. The main outcomes are:

KO/TKO — The fight ends by knockout or referee stoppage due to strikes. In MMA, this includes punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and ground-and-pound stoppages.

Submission — The fight ends by tap out. Includes chokes (rear-naked, guillotine, triangle) and joint locks (armbar, kimura).

Decision — The fight goes the full distance and judges decide the winner. Includes unanimous, split, and majority decisions.

    How to read the odds:
    - Fighter A by KO/TKO: +150
    - Fighter A by Submission: +400
    - Fighter A by Decision: +250
    - Fighter B by KO/TKO: +350
    - Fighter B by Submission: +800
    - Fighter B by Decision: +300

Strategy: Look at each fighter's finish rate. A fighter who wins 70% by KO/TKO but is priced at +150 for KO/TKO might offer better value than their -200 moneyline.

    Round Betting & Over/Under Rounds

Round-related props come in several forms:

Over/Under Rounds (Totals) — The most common prop. The sportsbook sets a line (e.g., 2.5 rounds), and you bet whether the fight ends before (Under) or after (Over) that point. A 3-round fight typically has a line of 1.5 or 2.5. A 5-round championship fight usually has a line of 3.5 or 4.5.

Exact Round Betting — Bet on the exact round a fighter wins in. Higher risk, much higher reward. Example: Fighter A wins in Round 2 (+600).

Goes the Distance (Yes/No) — A simpler version of O/U. Bet on whether the fight reaches the judges' scorecards.

    Strategy tips:
    - Heavyweights finish early — lean toward Unders
    - Women's strawweight fights often go to decision — lean toward Overs
    - Championship 5-round fights favor the Over unless there's a huge skill gap
    - Round betting is high variance — keep stakes small

    Prop Bet Strategy for UFC

When to use props instead of moneylines:

    1. When the moneyline offers no value. If a fighter is -350 on the moneyline but you're confident they'll finish the fight, their KO/TKO line at -110 offers a much better risk/reward ratio.

    2. When you have matchup-specific insight. If you know Fighter A has never been submitted but their opponent's only path to victory is submission, you can fade that prop.

    3. When the books misprice the method. Sportsbooks set method of victory odds based partly on overall fighter tendencies, but matchup-specific dynamics can create value.

    Common mistakes to avoid:
    - Don't bet props on fights you haven't researched — the edge comes from matchup knowledge
    - Don't parlay multiple props from the same fight — they're correlated, reducing your actual edge
    - Don't chase long-shot exact round bets — they're exciting but have massive negative EV unless you truly have an edge

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a method of victory bet in UFC?

A method of victory bet is a prop where you wager on how a fighter wins — by KO/TKO, submission, or decision. Each outcome has its own odds. It pays more than a straight moneyline because you're predicting both who wins and how they win.

How do over/under rounds work in MMA?

The sportsbook sets a round total (e.g., 2.5 for a 3-round fight). Bet Over if you think the fight lasts longer, Under if you think it ends sooner. If the line is 2.5, Under wins if the fight ends in rounds 1 or 2. Over wins if it reaches round 3.

Are prop bets better than moneyline for UFC?

Props can offer better value when you have specific matchup knowledge. A -350 moneyline favorite might be -110 to win by KO/TKO — a much better payout if you're confident in the finish. However, props are harder to predict consistently.
