Twenty-one years ago today, on April 9, 2005, Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar walked into the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas and changed combat sports forever. The UFC at the time was in serious financial trouble. Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta had purchased the promotion in 2001 for just two million dollars, and by 2005 had already lost approximately 34 million dollars trying to keep it alive. The Ultimate Fighter was a last-ditch effort, a reality show pitched to Spike TV as a way to introduce casual fans to the sport and its fighters. The season built slowly but steadily, and by the time Griffin and Bonnar met in the live finale, something electric was already in the air. What followed was three rounds of pure, relentless heart. Both men were exhausted, bloodied, and visibly hurting, yet neither took a single backward step. They traded strikes, scrambled on the ground, and got back up repeatedly to keep swinging. As the fight progressed, Spike TV’s ratings climbed in real time. Viewers at home were calling friends and telling them to turn on the television immediately. By the final round, the audience had surged to levels the network had not anticipated. Griffin was awarded the unanimous decision, but Dana White, clearly moved by what he had witnessed, stepped forward and announced that Bonnar would also receive a six-figure UFC contract. Both men had earned it entirely. That single fight gave the UFC the mainstream credibility and momentum it needed to grow into the global billion-dollar organization it is today.
