Jauregui Blitzes Demopoulos in 62 Seconds at UFC Vegas 121

Yazmin Jauregui knocked out Vanessa Demopoulos just 62 seconds into the first round to open the UFC Vegas 121 card on Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Jauregui pinned Demopoulos against the fence early in the exchange and unloaded a series of punches, including hooks that buckled Demopoulos and sent her retreating to the canvas. Demopoulos tried to fight off her back with an armbar attempt, but Jauregui followed her down and closed the show with hammerfists, forcing referee Blake Grice to step in at the 1:02 mark of round one. The official result: Jauregui defeated Demopoulos by knockout (punches) in round one.

What Jauregui's Finish Means for the Strawweight Division

Saturday's win snapped Jauregui out of a lengthy layoff and announced her return in emphatic fashion. Coming off the finish, Jauregui pushes her professional record forward with a stoppage that's about as clean a first-round statement as a fighter can make on a UFC card. For Demopoulos, a veteran of the 115-pound division, the loss is a step back after she'd built a reputation as a durable, crafty grappler willing to trade with strikers.

The finish also reshapes how oddsmakers and matchmakers will view Jauregui going forward. A dominant, fence-pinning knockout that ends in under a minute tends to move a fighter up the pecking order fast, and it's the kind of performance that puts Jauregui back into the strawweight conversation after time away from the cage.

Betting Angle

Fighters who return from long absences and immediately deliver highlight-reel knockouts often see their next listed odds shorten in a hurry, since sportsbooks and bettors alike will factor in the eye test from a finish this fast and this violent. For fans tracking Jauregui's next line, expect her to open as a live favorite in whatever matchup comes next given how decisively she took care of business here. Demopoulos, meanwhile, may see her market price drift as bookmakers adjust to a fighter who was stopped that quickly on the feet.
